Universal Official Program

Roller derby officials are an important part of the game and help keep our sport alive. In order to better serve the community, Austin Roller Derby has created a universal Official program which will allow anyone interested in becoming a roller derby referee or NSO (Non skating official) free access to continued education, trainers, and support.

Skating officials in this program will get access to:

  • Professionally designed online independent learning modules.

  • Hands-on experience.

  • A supportive learning community with advanced officials.

  • A comprehensive training program that requires no previous experience.

  • Paid opportunities to learn while officiating.

What is a roller derby Referee?

Referees are responsible for assessing and enforcing penalties, must be on skates, and must be uniformed in a manner that clearly identifies them as Referees. Referees must be distinguishable from each other; for example, by displaying a name or number on their uniform.

What is a roller derby Non Skating Official?

The primary function of a non-skating official is to track data bout the game, help the game run smoothly, and communicate information between officiating teams. Unlike refs, these are non-skating positions that do not require the participant to have skating skills.
